Amy Riordan (1:05): Hi Paige, thank you so much for joining us. We're so excited to have you on the podcast. Please introduce yourself.
Paige Wilhide (01:44): Oh, hi Amy. I'm so, so happy to be here. I am Paige. I am a video strategist and expert about all things, video visibility, video confidence, um, creating that online connection with your audience through video content.
Amy Riordan (02:02): So for those of you who don't know Paige was previously on our podcast, she talked about relationships and it's a really good episode. You should go check it out. But today she's actually here to talk to us about the relevance of video, specifically in this crazy time that we're in now with COVID, but also confidence when you're on video. So Paige, tell us a little bit about video confidence and even just a little bit about how you can promote confidence when you're on zoom calls with people.
Paige Wilhide (02:28): Yeah, sure. So, um, the importance of video confidence is beyond like you, there's this, there's this extra sense of vulnerability that comes with doing video that, uh, that doesn't apply to other mediums of communication online. So it's not blogging or, um, putting a photo on Instagram, right? There's, there's this deeper level of vulnerability that you're opening yourself up to when you post video because people can really not only like see you and hear how you sound and hear how you show up and see how you use your hands when you talk. If you have a list Blau your makeup is right. There's like all of these elements that go into it. But there's also this like sense of feeling and people can really feel you when you do video content. And that's the value of, of showing up on, on video and like really having the courage to put yourself out there on a deeper level.
Paige Wilhide (03:33): Um, because you're forming that deeper connection. So from that deeper connection, people trust you faster and they buy from you faster. And that's why video works so well. That's why so many people are moving over to video content right now when they can't do in person networking or they can't do live events, right? Everybody is really embracing this, this medium at the moment it is taking off like crazy. Um, and this is B, there has been no better time to get in front of the camera. So that's all to say. It's amazing to be on camera. It's amazing to be showing up on video, to be brave enough to like be open, opening yourself up vulnerably to showing up. And it's really, really important that you feel connected to yourself and your body and your voice when you're doing video. And that's the part of video confidence that I think a lot of people overlook.
Paige Wilhide (04:40): They're like, Oh, I'm just going to show up and read the script and everything will be fine. But no, it's that, that feeling that people get when you show up competently on camera and you're like fully in your light, fully in your power. That's when people resonate with you and that's when you can build the trust. Tell us a little bit about the resources that you have through Paige Media that could help people with video confidence and with videoing in general. Yeah, so Paige Media is my company where I do all kinds of courses and video trainings and teaching about video visibility and video vulnerability. And one of my most favorite products that I have is the 21 days to camera confidence course. And essentially what it is is a curated series of challenges to push students outside of their comfort zone to get you to actually shoot the videos, to record the videos and put them out there, like share them in this private community of other people who are participating in the course.
Paige Wilhide (05:47): So I'll back up a little bit. Like I come from a an acting and improv background. I come from a video production background. I've worked on every single side of the camera, um, for all different levels of businesses, from the solo entrepreneur who's just starting out all the way up to like the fortune 500 companies, helping them build their YouTube channels. So I've really seen all right, all levels of creation when it comes to video. And I have taken, I'd like curated all of these skills that I've learned over the years being in my own videos and directing other people's videos. And I've compiled them all into one fancy, really fun, really a boundary pushing course that allows people to, um, to play with video the way we wouldn't let ourselves normally, you know, we like show up live and we get really tense and we're like, okay, I'm going to say these three things and then I'm going to have my call to action at the end and everybody's going to buy for me. Well, there's a reason that that doesn't work for you. You know, because you are holding tight. You're like really tightening around this concept of how it's supposed to be rather than uh, interacting with the audience and um, and playing with them and really like building this, this conversation with your audience around whatever topic you're talking about but through video. So these challenges in my camera confidence course, I guess that's what we're coming back to. These challenges really allow you to play a little bit and have some fun and improvise and see how you can transform how you show up on camera. Going from that, like really holding on tight to this is how it's supposed to be. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, all the way to, I'm going to hit record and I don't even know what I'm going to say, but I trust that I have all of the confidence in the world to Mmm. To say what needs to be said. And that's the place from which you can really start selling your programs, your courses, your eBooks, your services, your coaching, right, whatever that is that your selling.
Amy Riordan (08:11): One thing that the listeners need to know is just how great this camera competence course is. And obviously this isn't a paid advertisement and it's a big reason why I have you on here. I was a part of it and it completely changed my world forever. I'm definitely not like, you know, a super professional and that's like definitely something that you just work on continuously. But I had a lot of different anxieties from live video and saying the word beautiful 15 times to not feeling like I belonged there and getting panicky when certain people came on and were watching me. Uh, so I really think that if you guys are looking to get into video, which you definitely should for your business, uh, that the video competence courses is huge. So Paige, what you tell to people that are brand, brand new to video, what's the first thing that they should do? Is it, is it taking your quiz that you're going to provide to us or is it, what would be the first thing you would do?
Paige Wilhide (08:56): Yeah, well first and foremost, definitely understanding your video personality. The thing that happens a lot of time that keeps a lot of my students, a lot of my clients from doing video is that they're comparing themselves to everyone else. So they're seeing what other people have put out there and they're like, you know, I can't be as, um, free spirited as Marie Forleo, right? Like they compare themselves to people who have been doing it for so long and you don't see the first video that that person put out there. You might not like that person might have deleted their first videos, right? You don't know, um, where they started from. So by comparing yourself to how everybody else is showing up, that can be a detriment too to you showing up in the first place. And that could keep you from actually starting. And that's what I created this video personality quiz for is so that you can really understand who you are as a creator and start from there. So when you know who you are as a creator, you have more of a blueprint of where to start and how you can show up in your videos. And then every single video you make, you're just going to get better and better and you're just, you're just going to improve. You're just going to get more confident. You're just going to start to, you know, you'll start to hone your voice over time. Um, and that only comes if you show up. It can't happen when you're judging yourself and holding yourself back and compare yourself. You'll never learn your video voice by watching everybody else. You're going to learn your video voice, bye. Doing it. Um, and the best place to start is take the video personality quiz, understand your video voice. I've got all kinds of resources for each type of video personality so that you can see what other people who have your same video personality are creating, what they're putting out there, how they are communicating with their audience, what kind of tools they're using. Um, you can get inspired by that, but not necessarily be comparing yourself to the point of staying stuck. So I would say start there. That is all about mindset and that's, that's like 50% of it, right? Actually, I'd say it's more like 75% mindset is just like huge and it takes over. The other part that keeps a lot of people stuck is the technical part and to get started with the technical part, you have everything you already need. It is in your pocket. Maybe it's in your hand. Maybe you're listening to this podcast right now from a device that can shoot really good video. Just start there. Start with what you have. Your phone is a great tool. It's a great, great tool, cell phone, and then the other element that's really important is light, so your sunshine, so you just need cell phone and some sunshine and you can make really great videos. A lot of people get stopped on, you know how I'm having a bad hair day or my makeup doesn't look great or whatever. A lot of times natural light will solve that problem for you. Natural light makes a huge difference. It makes your skin look really smooth. It makes you have that kind of glow, right? If you don't have access to natural light or if you're, you know, maybe in a basement or something, get a ring light. Those work really well too. You'll see all those, you know, makeup influencers with our diva ring lights. That's actually the name of it, a diva ring light. Um, and those are amazing as well. If you can invest a little bit of money in and you're a lighting. So really just starting with what you have. I tell every single one of my clients when they first start with me and every single one of my students, every single one of my friends who wants advice about video, my grandmother, like anybody who wants to video, I tell them eliminate the barriers to shooting. The less barriers you have to showing up and recording your video, the easier it's going to be for you. So if you have to set up a home studio every single time and do your makeup and do your hair, guess what? You probably won't, won't be doing video that much. Right? For me, I'm like, all right, I have my webcam on top of my camera. That's the best thing I can do today. I'm just going to shoot some videos with my webcam and my, my mic that's plugged into my ear buds like done. And it's not, you know, not the best quality, but I don't need great quality. Right? Like done is better than perfect. And that is, that's where I am. But it's, my philosophy to the end of time with video is done is better than perfect.
Amy Riordan (13:55): A lot of people don't realize that it's also about the content more than it is the actual picture and person and light in the video and how valuable that content can be. One of the things that I love the most about your, your course is that, uh, speaking of all the different personalities and all the different hurdles you see, you can see where people are struggling depending on the challenge. So, and everybody's different. So each challenge kind of shows you not only how you are and what your hurdles are, which is incredibly important to get over, but also what other people are struggling with and their questions can enlighten you in different ways as well. Of course. As usual we're going to link all of her details below. So that includes her website and her resources and the personality quiz as well as the video competence course. And I'm curious, what were your hurdles when you were first starting out?
Paige Wilhide (14:50): Oh man, I had a lot of self doubt when I first started. I really like there were, there were so many things about what I did as a business inherently. Like all the things that I stood for as a business were make a great video, make it compelling, make it engaging, have people interact with it. And if I uploaded a video that only got a few views, I would feel like such a failure. And I was like, I'm, I, I'm not, I can't do this. Why am I the voice of, of helping people, you know, put themselves out there and do more video content when the video content that I'm putting out there isn't resonating. And so I would stop myself because of that and I would, you know, take lots. I would take like long periods of time. I look on my YouTube channel and you can see when I started getting into self-doubt cycles because I would be uploading a lot and then I'd stop for a long period of time.
Paige Wilhide (15:54): And then I had like upload a lot and I'd stop for a long period of time. And um, that was really detrimental to the growth of my YouTube channel because if any of you out there have a YouTube channel or want to start a YouTube channel, one of the most important things is regular uploading is consistent uploading on a weekly, daily, you know, basis. And I kept myself aye. Aye. Started my YouTube channel in 2008. Um, yeah in 2008 and that was the beginning. Like that was just YouTube was still a little baby and if I had uploaded a video every single week starting in 2008 yes, what I would be like one of the biggest YouTubers today. But because I held myself back and because I had all that self doubt that kept me small and kept me like hiding. Um, I really, you know, I did not get to the point that I could have.
Paige Wilhide (17:04): I'm a, you know, obviously like now I see past all those things and I've healed a lot of the, the stuff that like makes me feel like I need to get approval from everybody. That of you means that I'm liked, you know, all of those things that, that come up when you, when you are putting yourself out there in video form. Um, and I've really worked through a lot of that stuff and now I can see that, you know, and I'm not perfect. Like I don't upload a video every single week. I try to, but I'm not perfect. And I've really started to embrace that and give myself approval for being imperfect. And I actually kind of, you know, sell my courses and, and myself and my coaching based on the fact that like, I am not perfect and neither are you and neither do you have to be in order to be successful with video.
Amy Riordan (17:53): I had an aha moment the other day when, and I can't remember what I was listening to. I feel awful that I can't give them credit. But yeah, someone said that people want to grow with you, so say you're new to YouTube and you're not quite sure what you're doing. Own it and, and let people like go on that journey with you. Oh, I think it was Vanessa Lau. I don't know if you've heard of Vanessa loud, but I'm actually pretty sure it was her. And she just talked about how she just felt like awful in the beginning. And she would document herself, she would video herself on her phone, just documenting her experience for her to look back on. And she's posted some of that. And it's, it's amazing that the transition that happened within her and, and also the fact that it's real. So when you're posting these videos and you're, like I said, owning it, it makes people feel like they can really relate to you Paige. I feel that throughout your whole entire thing. I don't know how you do it. And I, I strive to be that genuine in everything that I do.
Paige Wilhide (18:50): Thank you, Amy. Well, I, you know, I feel it for you and sometimes it's, it takes, um, an outsider, right. Like a, like somebody to be a mirror for us and reflect to us like what we don't see in ourselves.
Amy Riordan (19:05): Exactly. Yeah. And that's, that's huge. I think a lot of people don't realize how big that that is. Well, I, I guess is there anything else that you want to leave for my listeners as far as their, their business or themselves personally,
Paige Wilhide (19:20): I'll just say like in light of everything that has been coming up lately, um, if you are feeling like, uh, yeah, if you're feeling down on yourself or if you're feeling like you can't do this and if you're feeling like a day where you just really don't want to be making content, that's okay. Like it's okay to have this whole range of feelings and the best thing that I recommend you do if you really are committed to doing video and to staying on top of things. Um, one of the best strategies is to batch your content. So there are days during this whole process where I have felt like I, okay, I wake up and I'm like, I'm creating today. I just have to create and I just feel this desire to share what I have to share and tell stories and create and make videos and just put them out there.
Paige Wilhide (20:18): I use those days and I go like, I just create as much as I possibly can. I shoot a bunch of videos and then, because tomorrow, I don't know, like I might feel really depressed about something that happened or you know, the news might might take a turn or whatever and I don't feel like creating that day and I give myself permission to not create. You have to really be able to tune into yourself on a daily basis and like, what am I, what am I available to give today and one of my, what do I need to receive? And so that's why batching has been so powerful for me because I will put, I'll record a bunch of stuff and drip them out over time. So that those days where I'm not feeling so good where I just need to receive and lay in bed, then I will still be putting out a video, but I'll be laying in bed doing it, you know, and I won't, I won't have to record that day. So that's one of my biggest pieces of advice, especially during this time, is to really ride those rides of motivation. Ride those like waves of motivation when you feel them, and give yourself permission to dip when you need to dip. Um, and then the other thing that I'll say is we can, when you're first starting out, really easy to get overwhelmed with like all the videos out there, like there's so much content and you can drown, you can feel like you're not breathing in this sea of videos. So a give yourself breaks from like watching content because it's not that healthy to be consuming all the time. Give yourself breaks from that. Mmm. And B, when you want to start marketing yourself on video when you're ready to, or if you already are, pick one platform. Make it so easy for yourself. Just pick one place to be and master that place because it's like, you know, it's like going to a mall and there's all these stores to go into. There's Facebook, there's LinkedIn, there's Instagram, there's tick tock. Now you know, there's all these stores to go into, but you only have a limited amount of time. So like pick one store that you want to go into and just like really get to know it. Really like look on the shelves and see what's there, see what the deals are, right? I'm like, you know, building up this metaphor, but really like get to know Instagram. If you want to be on Instagram, get to know Instagram, understand your Instagram audience, make videos that are vertical videos for Instagram and just focus there and then get some data. Once you do that for like, you know, 1530 days, you'll start to get some data. See when people are watching, see what people are commenting on, see what people are liking, see if anybody's like sharing your stuff right. Um, then if you start to get conversions from that double down, like keep going and double down. Maybe maybe dive in a little deeper and do two videos a week instead of one, right? So that's a really great way to like figure out where you belong on online. Once you've mastered that, then you can maybe go over to LinkedIn and try that out, right? If you don't get any conversions after really committing to a platform for a certain amount of time, maybe then it's time to move over to a different platform or rethink your strategy or rethink what you're saying in your content. Or maybe you know, change how you're showing up in your content. Change the type of like the style of video that you're making me do you want, maybe you should be doing interviews rather than one like talking head videos, right? So I'm kind of throwing all these ideas out there, but it really comes down to pick one platform, stick with it, master it, get to know it, do video on it, get to know your audience on it and go from there.
Amy Riordan (24:24): I really want all of my listeners to hear the passion in your voice right now. It's not just in the video and the podcast, it's also, it comes across on every platform when, when you're into that topic, when you're into your business, but also when you're into that platform and that's like the important part of picking the one that you want and that you enjoy because you're most likely going to be more consistent on something that you enjoy.
Paige Wilhide (24:49): Yeah. Yeah. I mean, ask yourself where you consume content. You know, if you're not on LinkedIn every day watching LinkedIn videos and interacting with LinkedIn videos, maybe that's not really the platform you want to be on. Right? Like if you're scrolling through Instagram constantly, that's, that's a really good bet. It's a great bet that you can start there and you'll be pretty successful because you love it and know it and know how to interact with it.
Amy Riordan (25:14): Yes, exactly. Thank you Paige. It's fantastic. We're really excited to, to check out all of your resources. I know I, I haven't taken the personality quiz yet. I'm going to have to go play around with that.

I think that that's so important through your business as well. Same as like what my grandma always said about investing. Why would you buy a stock of a company that you don't enjoy their products or purchase the products from? There's a tiny little tidbit of advice for anybody who wants it. My grandmother, investor financial sidebar over here, but I think it's so true. It's insane how much your passion comes through what you do when you, when you do it. Right.
